FOH MIXER ERICK “OTTO” CELEIRO CHOOSES AUDIO-TECHNICA
ARTIST ELITE® 5000 SERIES WIRELESS FOR GAVIN DeGRAW

— Celeiro cites the AEW-T5400’s performance as better
than any wired microphone he’s ever used —

WINTER NAMM SHOW, ANAHEIM, CA, January 19, 2006 — Erick "Otto" Celeiro, FOH mixer for singer/songwriter sensation Gavin DeGraw, hears one particular question over and over again: “Engineers constantly ask me, ‘What is that mic Gavin is using?'" he says. The reply is always the same: “The Audio-Technica AEW-T5400. Why? Because this vocal mic sounds better than any wired vocal mic I have ever used before.” Celeiro uses the A-T AEW-T5400, part of A-T’s Artist Elite® 5000 Series wireless system, on tour with DeGraw, in support of his J Records debut album Chariot, because of its great sound and utter reliability. “Simply crystal clear and full of energy,” is how Celeiro describes the AEW-T5400’s performance. “The sound always starts with a brilliant microphone, and the AEW-T5400 is definitely that.”

Celeiro has a great signal chain into which the AEW-T5400 feeds. “I’ve been touring with a Soundcraft MH4 [console], which has nice sounding mic pre’s,” he continues. “I insert a Summit TLA50 compressor and keep his vocal channel pretty flat. Gavin has a great voice — it helps when the source is great.” DeGraw is a consummate songwriter known for his eloquent lyrics and a quixotic stage presence. “I can’t really say there are serious unique challenges to mixing Gavin other than he can be unpredictable: he has a hard time following a set list,” Celeiro laughs. “Often I don’t know what he’s going to play next, or it may even be a song I’ve never heard before — not to worry, [because] neither has the band. He has two positions for his vocal mics — he may be singing at his piano and all of the sudden he’s at his guitar position in the middle of a song.”

Of his mixing style, Celeiro explains, “I usually listen to what the band is playing, then I try and make it mine. I like to mix how I hear it should be. I have been fortunate thus far to have the freedom to do so. If you listen to Gavin’s record, it’s very pop sounding, but the band plays with a lot more energy, I find myself exaggerating that energy and the results are very satisfying.” A-T microphones are an admittedly important part of what Celeiro achieves at a gig. “We carry a full complement of A-T mics,” he confirms. “We don’t fly our RF rack so we use all wired mics including the AE5400 wired mic, which also sounds great, like all the A-T microphones.”

The AEW-T5400 is part of the A-T Artist Elite 5000 Series Wireless System, which offers two independent True Diversity receivers in a single full-rack housing while providing outstandingly reliable and flexible performance. Two hundred selectable channels are offered in each of two available UHF bands. Receivers may be linked to form a complete system in which the built-in IntelliScan™ capability automatically determines and sets the best available frequencies on all linked receivers. Equipped with Ethernet ports, the 5000 Series receiver allows computer management and control.
