GRAMMY® AWARDS SHOW RELIES
ON AUDIO-TECHNICA MICS FOR EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
— Audio-Technica proves the microphone of choice once again at
the 47th annual GRAMMY® Awards, confirming the company’s position
as microphone supplier to major events —
NSCA EXPO, ORLANDO, FL, March 10, 2005 — For the eighth consecutive
year,
Audio-Technica was the microphone called upon by the GRAMMY® Awards
show to provide outstanding sound quality and complete reliability.
The 47th Annual GRAMMYs, held on February 13, 2005, at the Staples Center
in Los Angeles, California, once again featured a large array of Audio-Technica
mics to support this premiere broadcast event. “Audio-Technica
supplied a wide range of hard-wired mics, as well as many of our Artist
Elite® 5000 Series UHF Wireless Systems — a total of 260 microphones
— all of which performed without flaw throughout the evening,”
stated Gary Boss, Audio-Technica’s Marketing Director, Live Sound
& Studio.
In 2003, the Emmy Award-winning 45th Annual GRAMMYs achieved
widespread acclaim for breaking new ground as the first major awards
show to be broadcast in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound, followed by an
equally ambitious 46th Annual show. The 47th Annual GRAMMY Awards continue
this trend, pushing the envelope with even more technical demands. Despite
the show’s nearly overwhelming complexity, the Audio-Technica
microphones delivered perfectly, both with top-grade audio quality and
unquestionable reliability.
The team responsible for this year’s GRAMMYs included
a veritable who’s who of broadcast audio, featuring a number of
renowned contributors returning to help realize this ambitious musical
event. ATK/Audiotek provided the sound system with FOH (front-of-house)
engineers Ron Reeves and Mikael Stewart, while the broadcast audio was
supervised by Phil Ramone, Chairman of the Producers & Engineers
Wing at The Recording Academy along with advisory council member Hank
Neuberger and Murray Allen for N.A.R.A.S. & Cossette Productions.
New York-based 5.1 Consultant Randy Ezratty and his Effanel Music team
remote truck, with music mixers John Harris and Jay Vicari, supplied
the 5.1 surround and stereo feeds, while Paul Sandweiss provided the
dedicated 5.1 surround mix.
Once again CBS delivered the highest form of HDTV, with 1,080 lines
of picture resolution and 5.1 channels of CD-quality surround sound,
to a number of major markets on its High Definition Television Network.
To successfully meet the sonic demands of this format, the audio engineers
and music mixers made critical microphone selections from the
Audio-Technica line.
A broad selection of Audio-Technica’s microphones
were utilized throughout the GRAMMY Awards show, including ATM25 (toms),
ATM35 (violins, violas and cellos), AE5100 (ride, hi-hats, vibes, harp,
cellos and choir), AE5400 (Leslie and background vocals) and AT4050
(bass, guitar, trumpet, trombone, woodwinds, sax, Leslie, drum overheads,
ride and hi-hats). AE5400 microphones were also employed for lead vocals
by Audio-Technica endorsers Los Lonely Boys, who received a GRAMMY for
Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Audio-Technica’s
Artist Elite 5000 Series Wireless Systems were used for front-line vocals
by Gwen Stefani, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, Johnny Van Zant, Blind
Boys of Alabama, Melissa Etheridge and John Mayer. In addition, the
GRAMMY Awards featured a special musical segment intended to raise money
for tsunami relief efforts. Audio-Technica mics played a pivotal role
in this landmark performance, with Artist Elite 5000 Series Wireless
Systems being used for vocals by Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Alicia
Keys, Steven Tyler and Billy Jo Armstrong.
Michael Abbott, Audio Coordinator for the 47th Annual
GRAMMYs, has come to rely on the uncompromising quality of Audio-Technica
mics through his experience working with notable broadcast events, including
the MTV Latin America Video Music Awards. He stated, “We are pleased
that Audio-Technica has continued its support for the 8th year as a
Grammy manufacturing partner. I would also like to commend A-T on the
5000 Series Wireless. Its high-fidelity and solid performance made it
a go-to wireless for artists and engineers alike.”
