NAB CONVENTION, LAS VEGAS, NV, April 18, 2005
— Genelec, the world’s longstanding leader in active monitoring, is displaying its new 8130A Digital Monitoring System. Featuring a 192 kHz/24-bit digital audio interface, AES/EBU digital and analog audio inputs, as well as automatic detection of word length and sampling frequency, the 8130A is the latest addition to Genelec’s critically acclaimed 8000 MDE™ Series of Bi-amplified Active Monitors. The 8130A is compact with advanced integrated construction, and has excellent dispersion and precise stereo imaging, which makes it ideal for near-field monitoring, mobile vans, digital audio workstations, broadcast/TV control rooms, surround sound systems, home studios, multimedia applications, and use with computer soundcards.

The New 8130A — Part of Genelec’s Critically Acclaimed MDE Series
The new 8130A is part of the 8000 MDE (Minimum Diffraction Enclosure™) Series, which takes a new approach to enclosure design, driver technology, and active electronics. In order to improve frequency and power responses, Genelec has designed a highly innovative enclosure, featuring rounded edges and gently curved front and sides. In addition to unsurpassed frequency response, the minimized cabinet edge diffraction provides superb imaging qualities, while the 8130A utilizes an entirely aluminum MDE design with integrated Advanced Directivity Controlled Waveguide™ (DCW™) to yield large internal volumes and outstanding mechanical strength. Bass response has been widened down to 55 Hz (-3 dB) while distortion is substantially lower due to a unique new rear port design. The 8130A has sufficient LF extension for most monitoring situations, however it can be complemented with Genelec’s 7050A subwoofer (cutoff point 38 Hz) for additional low-end response.

The 8130A Digital and Analog Audio Solution — What You Hear Is What You Get
Using an external D/A converter is a potential source of problems due to possible distortion of the signal or misalignment with the amplifiers. Hence, the monitoring volume level may need to be adjusted in the digital domain instead of analog. To ensure the highest quality digital and analog signal information, Genelec has addressed this potential problem source in the 8130A by making sure the alignment of the entire system from the digital input connection is carefully balanced. This includes automatic detection of word length and sampling frequency as well as a perfect level match throughout the system from D/A converter to power amplifier outputs.

The 8130A is simple to set up and use — the only connections required are the mains supply and the line level input. The female XLR input connector can be fed with either AES/EBU formatted digital signal or analog line level audio signal. The 8130A automatically detects analog or digital signals and directs them to the correct signal paths. When the 8130A is presented with a dual-wire/single channel signal, detection is automatic and the digital input mode is selected. Up to eight 8130A’s can be daisy-chained together in digital or analog mode through the two male XLR output connectors on the control panel.

The 8130A — Just the Facts
The 8130A features a 5-inch bass driver along with a 3/4-inch tweeter loaded into a new Advanced DCW. The free-field frequency response is 58 Hz to 20 kHz (?2.0 dB). Peak SPL per pair is 108 dB, driven by a pair of 40 Watt amplifiers.

Also included with each 8000 Series monitoring system is the unique Genelec Iso-Pod™ (Isolation Positioner/Decoupler™). The Iso-Pod is a clever mounting stand that allows for monitoring in either vertical or horizontal orientation. It enables the end user to accurately aim the acoustic axis of the monitor to the listener, as well as mechanically decouple it from the surface on which it rests.

In addition to the new rounded enclosure design and driver selection, the 8130A also features new crossover filters as well as the customary Genelec Bass Tilt, Bass Roll-Off and Treble Tilt room response controls.

The 8130A is magnetically shielded for use in environments where video monitors are in close proximity. Omnimount and Genelec monitor stand fixing holes are also standard.

The new Genelec 8130A Digital Monitoring System is currently available at an MSRP of $995.00 per channel.
