GRAMMY® WINNER GUSTAVO CELIS UPGRADES TO
GENELEC 8000 SERIES MONITORING FOR NEW MIAMI FACILITY

— Genelec 8050A will spearhead Supersonic Studios’ move into surround music mixing —

117th AES CONVENTION, SAN FRANCISCO, CA, October 28, 2004 — Gustavo Celis, whose work as an engineer and producer for artists including Mandy Moore, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Jewel and Shakira has earned him three GRAMMY® awards, has upgraded the surround monitoring system for his recently opened Supersonic Studios in Miami with Genelec 8000 Series components. Supersonic Studios, designed by the firm Pilchner Schoustal, is Miami’s first ground-up-construction dedicated surround mixing studio. Celis, who originally outfitted the room with Genelec 1031A speakers, decided to utilize Genelec’s revolutionary new 8000 MDE™ (Minimum Diffraction Enclosure™) Series monitors to take the lead in the region as Miami’s premier surround music mixing facility. The studio’s new 5.1 configuration features five of Genelec’s 8050A two way, bi-amplified active monitors, complemented by a Genelec 7070A LSE™ (Laminar Spiral Enclosure™) Series Active Subwoofer.

“I loved the Genelec 1031 speakers,” says Celis, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Berklee College with a degree in music production and engineering, and received critical acclaim for his work on the film Chicago which was awarded a Best Sound Oscar® last year. “That is what led me to the new Genelec 8000 Series. I listened first to the 8040 and then to the 8050, each of which sounded more amazing than the next. I realized that I needed the top of the line for this studio. That is the kind of monitoring that will help develop surround music work in this area.”

Supersonic Studios utilizes a hybrid design, offering a large assortment of vintage and classic contemporary signal processing equipment, such as the Chandler TG1 compressor, Neve 1073 mic pre, and Lexicon 960L Multi-Channel Digital Effects System, alongside a huge Digidesign Pro Tools|HD® hard disk recording system and the new ICON Console. This elite technology is housed in an aesthetically striking, modern interior design with a perforated metal motif.

“I’m not surprised that Gustavo chose the Genelec monitors for his new studio,” comments Jim McCormick, President of Magic Audio, the Orlando, FL dealer that made the sale. “We sell a lot of Genelecs throughout the region and especially in South Florida. They’ve become the common denominator for monitoring in the area, and they’re the speaker by which all others are judged.”

“That’s another advantage that Genelec monitors give me,” notes Celis, whose work can be heard on both the Spanish and English versions of singer Ricky Martin’s latest album. In fact, Martin’s next record was the first project done at Supersonic by Celis. “They’re the reference speaker used by many artists, producers, and engineers. So they create a consistent monitoring environment that is community-wide. Very few products in pro audio have ever achieved that,” Celis concludes.
