DIGITAL HEART, ANALOG SOUL:
XTA DISPLAYS SERIES 2 DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSORS
115th AES CONVENTION, NEW YORK, NY, October 10, 2003 —
Following the success of its speaker management system and SiDD dynamics
controller, XTA Electronics, based in Stourport on Severn, Worcestershire,
England, is offering a new line of digital signal processors aimed at
engineers, sound contractors, and broadcasters: the Series 2.
The Series 2 line consists of four products: the C2 Dual/Stereo
Compressor; D2 Stereo Dynamic EQ; E2 Stereo Parametric EQ; and the G2
Dual/Stereo Gate. Each unit features the power and performance of DSP
technology with traditional front panel controls for ease of operation.
The C2 includes “look-ahead” attack times
for instantaneous transient control, automatic time constants, and built-in
side-chain EQ. The unit features a “De-EQ” mode, an extension
of traditional de-essing, where the side-chain filtering affects both
the compressor’s frequency sensitivity and allows compression
around those frequencies only, delivering de-essing, de-popping and
many other band power reduction features.
The D2 is a true stereo dynamic equalizer, in which the
side-chains are linked and track 100% accurately. In addition, it offers
three bands of fully adjustable dynamic EQ, each band offering independent
control of envelope and frequency, with switchable shelving on the outer
bands. Alternatively, all bands may be set to full range for broadband
compression (a full range compressor is included). Each band can be
isolated for listening during side-chain monitoring and can be independently
bypassed.
The E2 provides four bands of fully parametric EQ, each
band sweepable between 20 Hz and 20 kHz and offering high resolution
Q and level adjustment. The outside bands are switchable to offer shelving
filters, and each band can be bypassed independently. In addition, fully
sweepable, selectable 2nd/4th order high and low pass filters are included.
Both input and output are monitored independently.
The G2 is a dual channel (linkable for stereo) gating
system with fully adjustable envelope including hold time, and large
status LEDs showing attack, hold and release phases. High and low pass
key filters are included and there is an additional multi-function band
of EQ with listen facility.
“These new tools are both a nod to the past, with
their easy-to-grab controls, and a step into the future, with crystal-clear
audio quality and cutting edge-features, such as look-ahead attack times,”
said XTA’s Andrew Grayland. “John Austin [Co-Director of
XTA] and I have designed these products to complement the advanced,
multi-functionality of the SiDD, a two channel digital dynamics processor
we introduced last year.”
Grayland continued, “We have responded to requests
from around the world and created a set of intuitive front panels to
exploit what we believe are the industry’s best-sounding DSP algorithms.
We were asked for the quality of our digital audio in simple-to-operate
packages for dynamics and EQ control, and that, simply, is what we have
done,” he concluded.
The Series 2 processors are currently available, with
an MSRP of $1,795 (each). For more details, visit http://www.xta.co.uk/.
